BECCS as a Possible Solution to Climate Change and Inequality
Essential Reading and Investment Potential
What is BECCS?
Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) is a form of renewable energy that involves the production of electricity by burning biomass like trees, plants, and crops in a power plant. This process also captures the carbon dioxide emissions in order to prevent them from entering the atmosphere. The opportunity in BECCS is that it can produce more energy than it consumes and has a net-zero carbon footprint. This makes it an important part of mitigating climate change.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that negative emissions technologies are required for any chance at achieving international mitigation goals. The IPCC also estimates that these technologies could remove 10 GtCO2 per year by 2100 in industrialized countries and 40-500 Gt CO2 per year by 2050 in developing countries to meet those same goals.
